The “Faith Without Works” Heresy

When I left Mormonism I had never been to a mainstream Christian church before, and in anticipation of what it would be like, I supposed that I would be surrounded by people who were committed to the truth, and who had the truth. I thought that they would be like the people I had read about in the Bible I had been studying, and mentioned to someone (a born again Christian) that I was looking forward to meeting the Christians at the church I was planning to attend. Her response to me was, “the people confess their sins a lot.” I was surprised when she described the Christians that I was about to meet in this way, but didn't say any more about it. I would come to find out later that this was code for “they can sin all they want (because they can't help it), and as long as they confess their sins they're still going to go to heaven.” I would learn that although these professing Christians give lip service to obedience to God, claiming that they obey Him because they love Him, they don't really take their sin seriously, because they believe in the doctrine of “the preservation of the saints” (once saved always saved.). They are constantly told by their pastors that they are depraved sinners who can't obey God. That's why He had to send His Son to obey for them.

The pastors and Bible teachers at the churches that I went to taught that we couldn't do anything right, that all our righteous deeds were like filthy rags, and that we disobey God every day in thought word and deed. Week after week, professing Christians sit under sermons like this, that tell them that they are wretched sinners who can't obey God. In fact, they are told that to try to obey God is sinning because they are supposed to wait on God to work through them, to wait for Him to change their hearts to want to obey. These ideas stem from the “depravity of man” doctrine, also known as “original sin,” which is the belief that the whole human race became depraved sinners when Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden. The belief is that a moral bent in our human nature was inherited from Adam because of his sin. Therefor, every person in the human race is born with the propensity to sin. They are born depraved sinners, who because of this inherent malady they can't choose truth or do anything right. God is pitiful of our sinful condition that we are born with, and so knowing this, He doesn't expect us to stop sinning.

This depravity of man heresy leads to other heresies, because the Bible has to be twisted to support it. The is why we have layer upon layer of deception in the mainstream Christian churches, in all denominations. One of the deceptions that the depravity of man heresy leads to is the heresy that we are saved by faith alone. God had to design the plan of salvation apart from obedience to God (because everyone is born a depraved sinner and can't obey God).

My heart cries out when I see people that are leaving the Mormon church and the polygamy groups who are being indoctrinated to believe these lies. They are going from one form of indoctrination to another. Though Utah is predominantly a Mormon state, it is swarming with professing Christians who are doing their best to convert all of the people they can, by leading them in the sinners prayer. These professing Christians jump at the chance to indoctrinate these refugees into their dogmas. They are just as persistent and forceful as the Mormons, who are trying to stop the bleeding from their church. I know from experience that the people leaving these ranks, especially those leaving the polygamy groups have been victimized in some way, and are looking for help to escape.

Since this is the primary concern on their minds, they are prone to overlook doctrines from the mainstream Christian churches that don't make sense, and they are therefor vulnerable to their indoctrination, as I was. I was caught up in the mainstream Christian dogma for awhile, but was blessed to escape it's brainwashing. But, I see many people leaving Mormonism and the polygamy groups who are thus indoctrinated, who never break free of it. They live the rest of their lives convinced that they have the truth, and don't realize that they have been indoctrinated to believe lies.

Most professing Christians don't read and study the Bible on their own, through a lens of impartiality. Instead, if they get the Bible out and read it on their own, they look through the tainted glass of this new indoctrination. In the past, the Catholic church had a monopoly on what the Bible taught because the only the leaders of the Church had access to the Bible. Today, the mainstream Christian churches can maintain their dogma, even though everyone has their own Bible, they just indoctrinate their congregations to interpret it the way they want them to. The people dutifully heed their teaching without even thinking about it. They become sufficiently brainwashed to interpret the Bible the way their pastors and Bible teachers want them to. The learned, distorted interpretations come to their minds so naturally when they study the Bible that they have to struggle to block them out of their minds if they want to be impartial. For example, they learn to instinctively interpret the Bible as teaching that when Jesus said “Go thy way and sin no more,” what he really meant was either “Go thy way and sin some more, or he didn't really mean it (because He knows that we can't obey Him),” They are convinced that all of their sins are forgiven, past, present, and future, no matter how they live their lives. Even though they play lip service to being obedient because they say they love Jesus, everybody knows that obedience is not required, and that their salvation is secure. So, they don't take their sins seriously..

Professing Christians are indoctrinated to take Bible verses like, Romans 4: 4,5, out of context:

Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.

They twist this verse to teach that salvation does not come by obedience to God, but this is NOT what the Bible is teaching here. They take this verse out of context. To understand what Paul is teaching here, you have to back up and start reading the book of Romans from the beginning. Paul was dealing with the circumcision group who claimed that the Gentiles had to obey the Jewish law of circumcision, saying that they had to be circumcised to be saved. Paul is teaching here that it t is apart from the Jewish law that we are saved. He is not talking about the moral law of God. Romans 2 teaches that even the Gentiles can obey the moral law of God: “For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. When Gentiles who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show the righteousness of the law is written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them (Romans 2: 12-17).”

I want to emphasize here that the idea that man is born with a sinful nature, that is, the inability to obey God is not true, as Paul teaches in Romans 2. The Gentiles, who by nature, obeyed the law (God's moral law), because it was written on their hearts. They are declared righteous.

Professing Christians like to use Romans 3, as a proof text to teach that everyone is born a sinner, and therefor can't obey God,. But they're also taking this out of context. These verses do not say that no one can obey God, only that they don't obey God. Professing Christians completely miss what the Bible is actually teaching here. Up to now, Paul has been making the case that we are not justified by the Jewish law, its rituals and traditions. He is refuting the circumcision group. He rebukes the Jews who think that they are the leaders of the blind, and points out who the real Jew is, the one who is circumcised inwardly (Romans 2:28).

Paul goes on to say that it doesn't make any difference between Jew and Gentile, they all have sinned (Romans 3: 10-18). This whole time, Paul has been talking to the circumcision group who think that they are special because they are Jews, God's covenanted people. He is pointing out here that they (the Jews) have sinned, not just the Gentiles, that they all (both Jews and Gentiles) fall short of the glory of God. Paul is saying this to refute the Jews' idea that the Gentiles have to join their group to be saved. Paul has been explaining that it is not by obedience to the Jewish law that we are saved. It is in this context that he says, “therefor, no one will be declared righteous in His sight by observing the law, rather through the law we become conscious of sin (Romans 3: 20). Paul is talking about the Jewish law here, not God's moral law. The Jewish law, i.e. the law of Moses, was a heavy burden for the Jews to keep, and Jesus pointed this out to the Pharisees (Matthew 23: 4). The law of Moses had about 6oo laws that would have to be kept. When there are more laws to obey, wrath is increased if you don't obey all of them. The Gentiles didn't have this heavy burden to bear, because they didn't have the law of Moses with its 600 laws. They only had to keep the righteous requirements of the law, the moral law, which was just a small part of the law of Moses.

The Jews were trying to make the Gentiles obey the law of Moses although they couldn't keep it themselves, and they liked to boast of their special heritage, placing themselves on a pedestal. They liked to boast that they were children of Abraham. To get this idea out of their head, Paul eliminated boasting altogether. He told them that there is no favoritism with God.

Paul went to great lengths to emphasize that we are justified apart from the law of Moses, in Romans. When he speaks of being justified apart from the works of the law in Romans 4, he is talking about apart from the works of the law of Moses. He spoke of it in terms of wages, saying righteousness comes to the man who does not work (who is not trying to obtain it by obeying the law of Moses). When he says that a man's faith is credited to him as righteousness, he is saying that faith (fulness) to Christ is credited to him as righteousness. He is not saying that God does not expect man to obey God's moral law. Faith and obedience are synonyms. A correct understanding of the word faith is to use the word faithfulness, which includes obedience to God's moral law. You cannot say that you have faith if you don't have obedience (James 2: 16-26).

I have a deep concern for you the people who buy into the “salvation through faith without works" heresy, because I was deceived by it for awhile. I sat under the sermons that indoctrinated me to believe in it It took me years to give myself permission to unravel the truth from the lies and reject many things that I was taught in the mainstream Christian churches. I felt like I did when I was in Mormonism, highly criticized if I ever questioned what I was taught, because everywhere you look, the professing Christians in the mainstream church believe these lies, because the teachers and pastors who are teaching them are so good at rhetoric that they make them seem so true. I sincerely hope to be able to snatch people out of this deception, to help them come to a knowledge of the truth.

Heretical Doctrines result from the faith without works heresy that is preached throughout the world by many pastors who are Wolves in Sheeps Clothing, such as the "once saved always saved heresy" Charles Stanley is one such wolf -This is from Mike Desario http://standingthegap.org/

“Stanley Quote:
The debate is over whether or not a man can be on his way to heaven one minute and on his way to hell the next. To answer that question, we must understand exactly what sends a person to hell. As we have seen, sin alone is not enough. . . . It takes more than simply sinning to get to hell. . . . It is not lying, cheating, stealing, raping, murdering, or being unfaithful that sends people to hell. It is rejecting Christ, refusing to put their trust in Him for the forgiveness of sin”

This is in DIRECT Contradiction to Bible Truth. Paul himself said many times, “Let NO ONE DECEIVE YOU! The wicked will not inherit the Kingdom of God.” But that isn’t enough for most people. They would rather put their trust in a ‘Wolf’ and be lead by the hand down the road to perdition than search the Scriptures for themselves and find the truth. The Truth is NOT difficult to understand….here are just a few passages that refute the statement above and expose this Wolf for what he is….

“If you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live” (Rom. 8:13).

“Do you not know that the wicked will NOT inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Cor. 6:9,10).

“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will NOT inherit the kingdom of God” (Gal. 5:19-21).

“For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person — such a man is an idolater — has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore, do not be partners with them” (Eph. 5:5-7).

“But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those that practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars – their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death” (Rev. 21:8).

Stanley Quote:
“… there are Christians who show no evidence of their Christianity

Really! That’s NOT what the Bible says. In fact it says the every opposite. IF a person failed to bring forth the proper fruit of his repentance and subsequent redemption, his faith is labeled ‘counterfeit’ and without effect! Paul frequently pleaded with the believers to beware least they ‘receive the grace of God in vain!’ 2Cor6:1. As many are doing today thanks to Wolves like this one teaching a deceptive message to multitudes of ‘faithful’ listeners. Again, read the simple truths contained in the Word of God and see for yourself that true Christianity is NOT a spectator sport!

“You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness” (Rom. 6:18).

“They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him” (Tit. 1:16a).

“What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?” (Jam. 2:14).

“We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, ‘I know him,’ but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him” (1 Jn. 2:3,4).

“Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the very beginning” (1 Jn. 3:7,8).

“This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; neither is anyone who does not love his brother” (1 Jn. 3:10).

“If we sin willfully after we have received a knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sin, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.” Heb 10:26-27

“Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God, on those who fell, severity, but toward you, goodness, IF you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.” Rom 11:22

“To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” Rom 8:6

“For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord Jesus, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning!” 2Pet2:20

“let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, least anyone fall after the same example of disobedience.” Heb 4:11

“Whoever hates his brother is a murderer and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” 1John3:15

NONE of these passages are difficult to understand. The meaning is not hidden in some ‘theological’ interruption. DON’T fall for the double-talk and deceptive speech of the wolves! The Bible is VERY Clear about the consequences of continuing in sin and the Spirit of God provides everything you need to live a godly and self-controlled life in Christ. 2Pet1:3-11.

Stanley Quote:
“Even if a believer for all practical purposes becomes an unbeliever, his salvation is not in jeopardy. Believers who lose or abandon their faith will retain their salvation. A Christian who at no point in his entire life bore any eternal fruit would remain secure in Christ!”

Pretty outrageous, isn’t it? No wonder the churches are full up of people with no intention of Obeying God or KEEPING His Commandments. NOTHING in Scripture could be more clear than the Absolute necessity of CONTINUING in the Faith and ENDURING to the end! But these wolves would have you believe that a ‘moment’ of faith placed in the finished Work of Christ at any given juncture of your life is all you need to secure your eternal inheritance. Live like the devil, in abject unbelief, without worry, just put your trust in the ‘preacher/teacher’ and all will be well. Wake up before it’s too late!

“eternal life to those who by Steadfast Endurance in doing good seek for glory, honor and immortality, but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath.” Rom 2:7

“My mother and brothers are those who hear the Word of God and KEEP it!” Luke 8:21

“More blessed are those who hear the Word of God and KEEP it!” Luke11:28

“If you love Me, KEEP My Commandments!” John14:15

“You are My friends IF you DO whatever I command you.” John15:14

“Do you see that faith was working together with his works and by WORKS faith was made perfect!” James2:22

“But do you want to know, O foolish man that faith WITHOUT Works is dead!” James2:20

“And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we KEEP His Commandments and DO those things that are pleasing in His sight.” 1John3:22

“These things I have written to you who believe in the Name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life and that you may CONTINUE to believe in the Name of the Son of God.” 1John5:13

“But he who endures to the end will be saved.” Matt10:22

It may be convenient now to follow the likes of Charles Stanley and others like him, but at the Great Judgment you will have NO EXCUSE. A child could understand our Lord, “KEEP, holdfast, practice, obtain, be diligent, fight, endure be Steadfast!” He DID NOT make it Difficult! The problem lays within yourself. You have no love of the truth, but rather love unrighteousness, God then sends you a ‘Strong Delusion’ so that you will believe a lie and perish. This is why millions of professing Christians can not understand the Simplicity that is in Christ. That KEEP means to Holdfast and Continue means to endure. Anyone could easily find these truths and obey them, but their desire is to please self and follow the wolves. There’s no shortage of false teachers who will tickle your ears with what you want to hear, but it won’t be long before you must give an account of things done in the body to HIM who sits on the Great Throne.”
